If you're a fan of ghost stories, then do we have a treat for you. Once upon a time, in little Adams, Tennessee, there was a haunting that garnered the attention of General Andrew Jackson, a man known for his fierce bravado and lack of superstition. It left a family raw, a man dead, and a legend that spans generations in its path. Curious about the Bell Witch? Let's take a walk down this scary little storyline together, shall we?
You may have heard of the Bell Witch haunting - one that tells of a ghost in the mid-1800s, a poltergeist, to be precise, that haunted the Bell family to death.
The story begins simply enough. John Bell of North Carolina moved his family to Robertson County, right in the heart of Tennessee. He was a fairly wealthy man and he and his wife built themselves a beautiful little family. It was in 1817 that he first found a scary looking animal in his corn field. After shooting at it multiple times, it simply vanished.
That's when it all began. With beating sounds on the walls, scary noises in the night, and the children having their covers ripped from them in the dark.
The hauntings got worse. Soon there were whispers, songs sung by an invisible woman - one that targeted their daughter, Betsy. Her hair was pulled and body slapped, pinched and beaten. The Bells brought friends to the home, and they experienced the same terrible fear.
This went on for years. The family began to go mad, worrying constantly about the invisible entity that hated their family with a voracious heat.
This is a replica of the Bell home, where John Bell died after slipping into a coma. His healthy had been failing since the hauntings started up, and after his death the family found a strange vial of liquid in the cupboard. Legend has it that once they found it, there was a voice that said, "I gave 'Ol Jack a big dose of that last night, which fixed him!" They threw it into a fire.
You can visit the Bell Witch Cave now. It's open to visitors in Adams and garners quite a few tourists every year. You can walk the walk, folks - but can you talk the talk? If you see a hint of that wicked witch from beyond, she may never leave you. Happy haunting.
