Memphis, Tennessee seems to get a bum rap from your local news channel, but here in Tennessee we love our blues-infused western brother. Bursting with culture and life and boasting delicious food that runs the cultural gamut, this city by the Mississippi is a true gem of the Volunteer State. Memphis was just listed as one of the top destinations IN THE WORLD for 2018, so we decided to dive a little deeper and figure out just why. We already love this Tennessee hotspot, and here's how it has stolen the heart of the world.
Tourism experts and guides at the internationally acclaimed Fodor's have just named their top 10 global destinations for 2018, and Memphis is on the list!
The list cites Memphis's rock 'n' roll roots as one of the top reasons for visiting the city. From Graceland to Beale Street, there's so much music history to experience.
They also mentioned Memphis's food as one of the highlights of the city, stating that it had some of the best barbecue on the planet. But we already knew that, of course.
One final thing that Fodor's mentions in the feature is that May is the best time of year to visit. With the Memphis in May festival and the Beale Street Music Festival both taking place in that month (combined with bearable weather, it's simply the best time to go).
While the Fodor's highlight stops there, there are still plenty of other reasons to go. The Memphis Grizzlies, the only top-tier professional sports team in the city, draw people from all over the region, and the games are fun to watch.
Plus, the city has tons of Civil Rights history. See where Dr. King gave his "mountaintop" speech, and be sure to visit the incredible Civil Rights Museum in the old Lorraine Motel.
The Mississippi also offers plenty of opportunities for locals and visitors alike to get out and explore. Visit the shopping area at Mud Island, or go to the Riverfront Park for unparalleled views.
Yes, folks, Memphis really does have it all. While none of us Tennesseans are surprised that it's a top-recommended global travel destination, we're glad it's finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Whether you're in Memphis or Nashville, Chattanooga or Gatlinburg, Tennessee has a lot to offer. Continue on, led by your tastebuds, to the best burger in the state. Do you agree?
