Here in Tennessee, we welcome folks from far and wide, inviting everyone to experience the gift that is living in Tennessee. Whether it's a visit to a family-style restaurant or ADA-friendly hike, we make room for everyone here in the Volunteer State. This applies to playgrounds, too, and it's our "warm and welcoming" spirit that led to the creation of a wonderful, accessible, all-inclusive playground known as Mary’s Magical Place in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
The inspiration for this playground came from a wonderful young girl named Mary Elizabeth McAuley.
This girl was a gift to anyone who knew her because of her relentless joy and smile that would light up the world. Mary was diagnosed with cerebral palsy which led her to be confined to a wheelchair. She was unable to join other children while they played freely on the playgrounds she visited. Tragically, she passed away when she was 14. She was so loved in her community, though, that soon a team was gathered together to create a playground to honor this cherished child.
Much fundraising and planning went into creating this accessible and inclusive playground in Tennessee. Many people came together from the community to rally around this worthy cause.
In 2018, Mary’s Magical Place opened to the public. This wonderful space in Hendersonville is for children and adults of all abilities to gather together and be included.
Unique features of the park make "play" accessible to those in wheelchairs; wide ramps allow access to the fun throughout the playground and there are purposely created pieces designed for visitors with various disabilities.
This playground sits as a beacon of hope for those kids who never had a chance to play before. They have their very own opportunity to join others and grow together in a safe and wonderful environment designed specifically for them.
Mary’s Magical Place also now hosts a large variety of events throughout the year. Seasonal activities like Easter egg hunts, live music, and community events make great use of the space and keep within the spirit of the park’s creation.
Mary’s Magical Place in Henderson, Tennessee, is an exciting space where kids of all abilities can enjoy a day at the playground. Make sure to keep up to date on the current events happening at the park by following Mary’s Magical Place on Facebook.
