Have you ever heard of The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee? It's true - a nonprofit organization that's licensed by both the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and U.S. Department of Agriculture, it provides a home to elephants that have been retired from the entertainment business. Take a look!
First things first: the naturalized elephant habitat is not open for visitation. All the elephants were once a part of zoos or the circus route, and they have now been retired to a life of peace and quiet. Each are given individualized care, and since its opening in 1995 the sanctuary has given 27 elephants the attention they deserve.
There are more than 2,700 acres for the entirety of the sanctuary, and there are three different areas that pertain to Asian and African Elephants as well as a quarantine area. Each has their own live video feed so you can observe from the comfort of your home - without disturbing THEIR home, of course.
The Asian elephant area spans 2,200 acres, with a 300-acre habitat for African elephants and a 200-acre facility for quarantine, if there's ever an illness to be treated.
If you do happen to be in the Hohenwald area, you can drop in to The Elephant Discovery Center downtown. You'll be able to learn more about the sanctuary as well as the elephants that are being helped. Interesting fact: only female elephants find their home at the sanctuary. Many more females are held in captivity as opposed to males, and they require much different care. It's much more effective and helpful to take care of the elephant ladies.
There has been one male elephant at the sanctuary, Ned, but The Performing Animal Welfare Society Sanctuary in California predominantly serves males.
You may wonder, why Tennessee? Well, due to our mild climate and seasonal variations as well as our generous abundance of foliage, it's perfect for our elephant friends. There are heated barns available for year 'round use on the property as well.
What a neat place! You can see the elephants for yourself on the EleCam, and you can donate towards the betterment of these beautiful animals right here. We'd highly recommend it - this is a cause worth supporting.
