Some may feel that libraries have gone the way of the dinosaurs, quiet aisles stuffed with books replaced with Kindle readers and back-lit digital shelves. Here in Nashville, however, our downtown library is our pride and joy. A literary hub for both young and old alike, you may find yourself wandering the halls in search of the weekly children's puppet show or an author reading. Either one can be expected!
Located at 615 Church Street in downtown Nashville, the public library is one of the most beautiful and prolific buildings in the heart of the city.
Walk inside and you'll find even more to enchant the eyes and dazzle the senses. Soaring ceilings and marble-drenched, echoing halls elevate the local library to new heights.
The upstairs reading room is stunning on its own - the floor to ceiling windows, reading tables and chandeliers hung high give the whole space a dreamy atmosphere.
The children's section is huge, with weekly puppet shows and storytime hours scattered throughout the week. There's a small jungle gym (!!!) as well, which makes for a perfect distraction if reading gets a bit too heavy.
If you have the time, we'd recommend that you visit The Civil Rights Room. Nashville's Civil Rights Collection has a solid handhold in the history of the city, exhibiting the heartache and rightful dissension felt and enacted by African-Americans during racial segregation.
Authors like Wally Lamb and John Irving have made their way to the downtown library for lectures, and during the Southern Festival of Books you'll find all sorts of events hosted throughout.
We're going to give you a quick view of the reading room one more time - couldn't you just spend hours here? The public library parking garage offers up highly affordable parking as well, especially for being in the heart of Nashville.
If it gets warm outside you can enjoy your book on the back patio, serenaded by the soft sounds of the water fountain. This hidden oasis is a favorite amongst locals and downtown businessfolk.
Have you visited? Would you go? Whether you're bringing young ones or looking for a quiet space to work, this is one of the prettiest places to escape in the city.
If you're looking to experience the city in a new kind of light, you should take a look at these historic photos of Nashville. They're quite a step back in time!
