South Dakota has a rich human history dating back tens of thousands of years, but the area's natural history dates back even further to the tune of hundreds of millions of years! While none of us were around to experience these changes first hand, we can still get an inside look at them via South Dakota's W.H. Over Museum:
Tucked away next to the DakotaDome on the University of South Dakota campus, the W.H. Over Museum is a natural and cultural history museum on a mission to "collect, preserve, document, exhibit, research, study and interpret objects relating to natural and cultural history, primarily of South Dakota."
Comprised of various rooms and collections, the W.H. Over Museum has something for every interest and age group, beginning with their impressive Discovery Room!
During your visit to the Discovery Room, you will learn about all things South Dakota natural history via examples of plants and animals, minerals, fossils, and much more.
Do you love South Dakota's cultural history? There is plenty of that at W.H. Over, too, as the museum is home to rare photos, art, archaeological artifacts, and dioramas.
Have you ever wondered how our ancestors lived? You can get a firsthand glimpse at the W.H. Over Museum, which boasts an old "Pullman" kitchen, plus antique vehicles, home displays, and clothing.
In addition to all of the above, the Museum also hosts a number of different special events and traveling exhibits, so be sure to visit their Facebook for a calendar of upcoming events.
The W.H. Over Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are much appreciated.
