When most people, even residents, think of parks in Greenville, there's one that often goes overlooked but it shouldn't be. It sits in a dugout area approximately 15 feet below the street level and is nestled between two neighborhood streets in busy downtown Greenville. Technically, Rock Quarry Garden is an annex of sorts, shaped like a thumb protruding out of Greenville's largest city park known as Cleveland Park. This beautiful, rustic park often feels like a magical glen far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Read on to discover why this might be your new favorite park in South Carolina.
Take a walk down below that street level and then wander in wonder through this hidden and very underrated garden park in South Carolina.
Rock Quarry Garden was converted from an old rock quarry back in the early 1930s. It includes a 20-foot waterfall that spews in ribbons at the head of the garden and then its small stream passes right down the middle of the park.
Way back in 1925, the City of Greenville began to develop Cleveland Park into the wonderful, green resource it is today. And then in the early 1930s, the Greenville Garden Club took on an old abandoned quarry in the park. The club created a glorious array of manicured flora including lots of flowers.
By 1932, Rock Quarry Garden won a Better Homes & Gardens Award for beauty. It seems the ladies (and gents) of the Greenville Garden Club had (and have!) a keen eye for using the stones in the old quarry for design.
Even those quarry stones that didn't get mined are a beautiful part of the allure here.
Benches and rock walls throughout the garden provide natural seating for visitors.
We think this rock quarry garden is a must visit; consider adding it to your bucket list.
Those who have discovered this hidden gem in Greenville know it's a very popular spot for weddings.
Fees for using the park for a wedding are quite affordable. There is a party size limit of 100.
Admission to Rock Quarry Garden is absolutely free.
Visitors will find limited free parking on Sherwood Street near Ridgeland Drive.
Additional parking (paid) is available one-half mile away at both the Greenville Zoo lot and the Broad Street parking garage.
