As with just about everything in this world, things change and evolve. Gone are the days when you could bring the kids along to buy some bread and other staples at the local general store - and then make a special stop at the store's penny candy counter. Those days may be gone forever, but the penny candy concept (pay by the pound or by the piece) still remains and the evolution of the penny candy counter itself has magnified the selection beyond imaginable proportions.
Now, instead of a big general store that has a a candy counter, we have entire candy stores!
And the look and size of that penny candy counter has changed significantly. We may miss the old days and the nostalgic charm of the old general stores, but wow... this change is a good one! (Just don't tell your dentist we said that... )
The images you're seeing are from River Street Sweets' location at Broadway on the Beach in Myrtle Beach.
The gigantic candy store features an entire wall of "penny" candy. (Think of penny candy as candy sold by the piece or by the pound. It's not actually a single penny... even though it may have been a hundred years ago.)
In addition to that massive wall filled with that colorful candy selection, River Street Sweets also has a wide variety of irresistible handmade sweet chocolate treats.
And cases filled with other candies sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
You can even see candy in the making. In the image below, school children are watching a taffy making demonstration. So fun!
Yes, the penny candy counter still exists but has evolved into an entire store!
River Street Sweets began on Savannah's famed River Street in 1978. The concept grew, changed, and flourished into franchised locations throughout the South. There are seven locations in all: three are in Georgia, and four are in South Carolina (North Charleston, Charleston, Broadway at the Beach/Myrtle Beach, and Barefoot Landing/N. Myrtle Beach.)
Ready to calm that sweet tooth? The address for Broadway at the Beach location (pictured above) is: 1171 Celebrity Cir., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. It's open seven days a week: Monday - Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 pm., Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Learn more and get the addresses for the other three South Carolina locations at this link on the official website.
