Many people know that South Carolina is widely believed to be among the most haunted places in The South. Ghost tours are abundant in the Palmetto State, and each one offers an in-depth look into the state's haunted past - and present. But no walking tour can make the same impression as stepping foot into one of those big haunted homes, especially one that is located on the famous Battery along Charleston Harbor. Check out the real life haunted house below, and then decide if you brave enough to visit in person...
The original home at 20 South Battery was built in 1843; however, after the siege of Charleston and the end of the Civil War, the house — built in true fashion of a Charleston single house — underwent an extensive renovation in the early 1870s.
The renovations, additions and overall changes made to enlarge the home and change it from its original Charleston single house layout to the enormous Second Empire grand style in which it remains today... likely stirred up the spirits (who don't like change) who still roam the property.
Today, the old Charleston single house is not recognizable from the street. The extensive expansion and renovations that occurred beginning in the 1870s have converted a modest home from 1843 into what is now known as the main house for the Battery Carriage House Inn.
The enormous house, and the carriage house to the rear are, without a doubt, the most haunted homes in all of South Carolina. Guests who have stayed here regularly report seeing shadow figures moving in their peripheral vision.
Others say they have an eerie feeling of always being watched...
The inn has several rooms that have fairly regular reports of ghostly activity. Rooms #3, #8 and #10 are among those with the most paranormal activity. If you spend the night in #10, then you'd better leave a little extra room on one side of the bed.
A multitude of guests have reported the door opens in the middle of the night and they see a male figure come into the room. He then lays on the bed next to them. He's called the Gentleman Ghost.
It's a rare occurrence to get to go inside a real life haunted house, and the Battery Carriage House Inn is definitely haunted. Have you been to this grand old home and carriage house in Charleston? And did you experience anything otherworldly? We'd love to know!
