Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve in Lexington, South Carolina is a 460-acre heritage preserve approximately 30 minutes southwest of Columbia. The unique nature park features a sandstone rock outcropping that's millions of years old and it's absolutely stunning.
The main trail at Peachtree Rock is 2.4 miles and offers spectacular things to see.
The trail weaves through large layered sandstone rock formations that line either side of parts of the hike.
Unfortunately, in December of 2013, a hiker reported the namesake of this preserve, Peachtree Rock, had toppled over. Nature had been whittling away at the soft layers of sand and sandstone at the bottom of the famed rock formation for millions of years.
An eventual fall was her destiny. After, the Nature Conservancy consulted with experts who said it just wasn't possible to safely prop it back up. You can see her here, in a gorgeous photo taken before she fell. And if you really have your heart set on seeing a rock shaped like a Peach tree, then there's another peach tree rock near the back of the park. It's been named, "Little Peachtree Rock."
In spite of the loss of the original Peachtree Rock, there's still so much to see and do here.
On the trail, you'll encounter one of the few waterfalls located in the midlands of South Carolina.
