South Carolina has a variety of lighthouses along the beautiful coastline. If you have a natural affinity for lighthouses, then you'll love the ultimate Lighthouse Road Trip we published in 2016. It will lead you straight to eight of the Palmetto State's lighthouses.
One of them stands out among the rest as unique and almost bizarre in appearance, compared to the tapered columns of most of the others. Take a look and see for yourself.
The Leamington Lighthouse, also called the Rear Lighthouse of the Hilton Head Range Station, is without a doubt different from the usual lighthouses we see in the South.
But even with her unusual column, she's still a charming lighthouse - boasting a wooden hexagon-shaped deck and housing.
Her support legs (off to the sides) are made from cast iron and span all the way to the base of the wooden watch room on the first floor of the deck.
You can see it better here. You can also see she's being well taken care of, even though she seems to be sitting in a wooded area now.
Here's an old photo submitted with the application to the National Registry of Historic Places. It shows the interior cast iron spiral stairs that are reportedly still in place. You can also see the interior walls appeared to be covered in wood.
In fact, she was built in 1879-1880 and the exterior of the monopole was originally sheathed in wood. The sheet metal you see today was probably added in 1931, according to that same application form.
The original property here also included the keeper's house, a front range light that was eventually movable, and a brick oil house. Only this "rear light" and the oil house remain on the property.
Here, you can get a good look at the watch room. It was on the bottom floor.
The lantern room was on the very top of the light. It's no longer in operation. The light served to guide ships into Port Royal Sound until it was removed from service in 1932.
The good news? You can visit the Leamington Light in person. It sits in the woods on the fringe of a golf course on Hilton Head.
See a stunning up close drone video of the property and this lighthouse in the YouTube video below from user Larry Clarke.
Technically, this light is called the Rear Lighthouse of the Hilton Head Light Station. Originally, there was a "Front Range Lighthouse" as well. Navigators would line up both lights and know they were in a safe channel when entering Port Royal Sound. If you want to visit her in person, you may be required to state your intentions at a guard gate upon entering the area. Here's a Google Maps link to her location.
