Put all of South Carolina's waterfalls side by side and you'll find none of them are quite as spectacular as the sprawling and ever-so-wide Cedar Falls along the Reedy River. The cascading falls spill down the river for at least 200 feet with water streaming and scattering over smooth rock and boulders. Not only is it a sight to behold, it also has historical significance.
You'll find Cedar Falls along a 2.1-mile loop trail at Cedar Falls Park in Fountain Inn.
Nearly half of the trail follows along the southern end of the Reedy River (the same river that sports the famous waterfall at Falls Park on the Reedy in Greenville).
And the elevation gain along the trail is minimum at 147 feet making it more of a leisurely walk than a hike.
An offshoot of the river along this section of the Reedy was dammed in the 1800s. Ruins of an old mill and its early 19th century dam can still be seen along the trail and the river.
In the early 1900s, another dam was built (this one to power hydroelectricity). This time, the dam spanned the full width of the river - a little over 200 feet!
The second dam is the most prevalent of the two.
Looking back even further to this history of Cedar Falls, Native Americans used the falls as a ford over which to cross the river. Imagine wading all the way across the 200-foot span!
A word of caution at Cedar Falls: there's been a long-term advisory against swimming here due to harmful bacteria in the waters. The advisory is for humans, but it might be a good idea to keep pets out of the water as well.
Is Cedar Falls the widest cascading waterfall in South Carolina? It's hard to say for sure, it certainly has some competition from the Saluda River as it passes through Columbia.
But this 90-acre park in Fountain Inn most definitely features one of the best of South Carolina's waterfalls. Be sure to check out Cedar Falls Park the next time you get a chance!
Cedar Falls Park also features a playground, walking trails, picnic shelters, restrooms, and sand volleyball. It's open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
