A visit to an old cemetery can be a fascinating experience filled with both hope and despair. If you happen to have a personal connection with one or more of the grave sites, then feelings can range from hopes of reconnecting with the souls of departed loved ones to the subsequent despair found in the reality that they’re no longer with us. One of the most intriguing graveyards in South Carolina – in more ways than one – is located in the small town of Graniteville (population, about 2,500) - and you'll want to avoid going alone or after the sun sets...
The Graniteville Cemetery is a sprawling space with very little jutting up from the horizon except for the many thousands of grave markers. Established in 1850, the site initially had many markers that were made of wood and have completely deteriorated, leaving some graves without details to mark the legacy of the soul beneath.
And then.. there's the nameless grave of The Little Boy whose heartbreaking story is enough to reduce even the most stoic of persons to weeping tears of despair.
In 1855, the small child was discovered on a train passing nearby all alone and he was very sick. They removed him from the train at a nearby station and he ended up in a Graniteville Hotel where he soon died without anyone discovering his identity. He's buried here in the old section of the Graniteville Cemetery. People often visit The Little Boy and leave toys on his unforgotten grave.
It's a welcome story of love and acceptance for the little boy with no name. Visiting his grave is likely a touching and rewarding experience... as long as you do it during the daylight hours! This old graveyard is one of the most haunted in the state.
Perhaps Graniteville's history of tragic train accidents plays a part in the after-dark happenings at the old cemetery. To date, there have been at least three horrible tragedies involving trains in this formerly thriving cotton town.
Over at the cemetery, after the sun goes down, there are reports of the laughter of children roaming about the space. One legendary tale places a witch who's buried in the graveyard roaming about at night, after which the laughter of the disembodied children turns to shrill screams.
Have you heard the many haunting tales about this notorious cemetery in South Carolina? Unfortunately, this isn't the only haunted cemetery in South Carolina. There are many more.
