For some people, the March Madness Basketball Tournament quietly signals the end of Winter and the arrival of Spring. With each Spring there's a promise of another exciting baseball season where everyone starts over and the slate is wiped clean. It's perfect.
You may be surprised to learn that South Carolina has a baseball park that is a replica of the famous Fenway Park. You don't have to be a diehard sports fan to have heard of the Boston Red Sox or their famous field, Fenway Park. The Red Sox have been playing there since 1912.
South Carolina's "little Fenway" is home to the Class A team of the Boston Red Sox, The Greenville Drive. Our "little Fenway," called Fluor Field, opened on the Westend of Greenville in 2006 and, except for the number of seats (Fluor Field seats rougly 5,800 while Fenway seats a little more than 37,000) the similarities are remarkable. Take a look:
The field at "little Fenway" is exactly the same size as the field in Boston. And there are other likenesses as well. For instance, our South Carolina field has its own "Green Monster," an outfield icon that has newly added seating this season.
The Green Monster at Fenway (shown below) is 37-feet high -- while the one in Greenville is only 30-feet high.
Here's the Green Monster at Fluor Field in Greenville.
Additionally, our "little Fenway" uses the same nostalgic manual scoreboard as you'll find at Fenway Park.
Here's the manual scoreboard in Boston. Amazing likeness, wouldn't you say?
No Red Sox, or Red Sox Class A team game experience would be complete without belting out Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" in the middle of the 8th inning. Not to worry, you'll get to sing your heart out in Greenville's little Fenway, just like they do in Boston.
Fenway just wouldn't be the same without the yellow Pesky Pole located in right field.
And neither would Fluor Field, our little Fenway. You can see the yellow Pesky Pole in just about the center of the photo below.
And finally, the other thing you'll find at Fluor Field in Greenville that you'll also find at Fenway is a spirited crowd that loves their baseball!
And loads of food and bev.
If you haven't visited South Carolina's "little Fenway" yet, the perfect opportunity would be to go see The Drive take on the Charleston Riverdogs.
The Drive takes on the Riverdogs at little Fenway in three game series in 2017. You'll find them listed on The Greenville Drive page at MLB.com here.
Fun relevant fact: Five players on the 2013 Red Sox World Series Championship roster were brought up from South Carolina's litte Fenway team, The Greenville Drive. Have you ventured over to Greenville yet to see this amazing park and watch these rising star athletes? If yes, then we'd love to hear about your experiences (and see your photos) in our comments.
