Chocolate is one of life's simple pleasures. Over 6.5 billion pounds of chocolate are consumed each year in the United States, and as staggering as that number is, Switzerland is actually the country where the largest amount of chocolate is eaten. In 2022, over 8 million tons of chocolate was consumed around the world. Clearly, we as the human race adore chocolate. Interestingly enough, there are up to 10% of the population who don't like how chocolate tastes, citing it as too sweet or too bitter. For all of you in the other 90-or-so percent, you will jump for joy to learn that there's a chocolate festival in Florence, S.C. where you can have a good excuse to indulge!
This year's event is scheduled for Friday, February 23, 2024.

Included in the ticket price, which is less if you purchase in advance rather than at the door, is the decadent chocolate tasting experience, a complimentary chocolate bar, and your chance to win one of the golden ticket giveaways. The event begins at the Greater Florence Chamber Office located at 100 W. Evans Street where you check in and receive your map and the chance to win a golden ticket.
Adult participants can upgrade their tasting experience at select participating downtown restaurants with chocolate-infused cocktails or wines. Upgrades will vary by location at a cost per sample to be paid at the venue. Upgrade locations will be noted on the tasting map.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. Woven by Gullah artisans for more than 300 years, sweetgrass baskets are some of the most cherished cultural souvenirs in the country. Seeing the artisans weaving baskets in person at the Charleston City Market, the epicenter of sweetgrass basketry is a must for any first-time Charleston visit. The preservation of this art is one way the Gullah honor their history and help keep their culture alive. Taking place on July 27th, 2024, the annual Sweetgrass Festival in South Carolina is a fun event to attend to learn more about this cultural tradition and the overall Gullah culture in South Carolina as well.
The Sweetgrass Festival is held every summer in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina at Memorial Waterfront Park.
The sweetgrass basket-making art form was designated as South Carolina's official art craft by Governor Jim Hodges in 2006, and the largest percentage of the original sweetgrass basket makers live within Mount Pleasant and surrounding communities.
The art form continues to be passed down from generation to generation, with one current basket maker teaching her grandchildren, the seventh generation in her family to learn it. Originally brought to Mount Pleasant from Sierra Leone when their ancestors arrived and had nothing to work with, the sweetgrass basket weaving art was used to make baskets for storing and carrying things.
Basket weavers have said some of their best basket designs have been created when they listened to the grass! Those of us who love spending time in nature can relate to this notion.
