One major reason why my heart will always be in San Francisco is its vibrant and colorful neighborhoods, all of which have their own distinct charm. The bustling, centrally located Hayes Valley is one of those notable neighborhoods. It sits next to the Civic Center and near all the sophisticated cultural happenings, including the opera, ballet, and symphony. You're also steps away from high-end boutiques, sunny outdoor patios, and top restaurants, bars, and cafes. Here are 10 of my favorite things to do in this charming neighborhood in San Francisco.
1. Enjoy the great outdoors at Patricia's Green.
This small park at Hayes and Octavia serves as a focal point to the neighborhood. Take your food and coffee to go (there are plenty of options in the surrounding area—keep reading for suggestions!), take a seat, and enjoy the sun and some entertaining people watching.
2. Get wired at Ritual or Artis Coffee.
One of the pioneers of "third wave" coffee, Ritual has been a San Francisco fave since it opened in 2005. Their small shipping container outpost in Hayes Valley is adjacent to Patricia's Green, and it's a prime spot to get a strong cup of java. I also enjoy Artis Coffee, a small coffee shop just around the corner on Octavia, which roasts their beans "live and on demand."
3. Go out for a fancy meal at Absinthe or Zuni.
There are more than a few upscale restaurants in the area, but two longstanding joints stand out: the French and Italian-inspired brasserie and bar Absinthe (you must order the spicy fried chickpeas!) and Zuni Cafe, where the whole roast chicken with bread salad brings in foodies from around the world.
4. Grab a beer and a brat at Biergarten.
Grab yourself a pretzel, brat, and liter of beer at this minimalist Bavarian-style beer garden, which offers one of the city's best spots to drink in the sun.
5. Take in a show at the symphony, opera, or ballet.
In Hayes Valley, you're close to all the cultural goings-on. Catch a San Francisco Symphony concert at Davies Symphony Hall, or hop across the street to the War Memorial Opera House, where the San Francisco Opera performs both contemporary and traditional shows, and where the world-class San Francisco Ballet showcase innovative dance programs.
6. Feed your wanderlust at Flight 001.
This sweet boutique for the jet-setting crowd will have you craving a world-class adventure with both functional travel accessories (luggage, universal adapters, maps, toiletry bags) and things you never even knew you needed (a gin & tonic carry-on cocktail kit?!).
7. Bend the body, calm the mind, and revitalize the spirit at Yoga Tree.
One of San Francisco's best and most renowned yoga studios, Yoga Tree offers a full schedule of classes, ranging from Hatha Flow to Jivamukti, with some of the city's most in-demand instructors.
8. Find incredible deals on designer apparel at Cary Lane.
On the corner of Hayes and Laguna you'll find this designer sample outlet boutique for men and women, which offers up to 80% off the regular retail price. This means it is possible to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank. And they even have personal stylists if you need some fashion advice.
9. Eat like the French at Chantal Guillon, Miette, and La Boulangerie.
The French have made quite a stamp on Hayes Valley, especially when it comes to their delicately crafted and delectable desserts. Head to Chantal Guillon for a crisp, creamy, colorful macaron; stop at Miette for more macarons or the gingerbread cupcake (voted the "Best Cupcake in America" by The Food Network); then check out the pastry and sandwich selection at La Boulangerie.
10. Take in a show at the Rickshaw Stop.
One of the finer small music venues in San Francisco, the Rickshaw Stop (fit with actual vintage rickshaws—and skeeball!) hosts both established and up-and-coming indie and electronic acts. Pro tip: Head to the balcony for some great aerial views of the stage.
