We all need a little whimsy in our lives every now and then. Fortunately, we've got some pretty cool places in Rhode Island where we can enjoy a touch of whimsy, a bite to eat, and a chill vibe. This unique market in Newport, Rhode Island, for example, has been called a tourist trap by some, but it's one of those places that we can go when we have an hour or two free, want to pick up a unique gift, or feel like having a meal.

Anyone who's lived in Rhode Island, and particularly Newport, for any amount of time has undoubtedly heard of and likely spent time exploring Brick Market Place, a popular year-round destination that appeals to locals and visitors.

The general store used to rule all. Before you could just pop online or drive to Walmart to get what you needed, a Rhode Island general store would be where you went if you needed anything from fabric to some candy for the kids. Nowadays, general stores might not be as integral to American society, but that doesn't mean they don't have value. A trip to any of the general stores in Rhode Island can take you back to a simpler time and provide a great way to spend some time browsing for treasures. We are particularly fond of this lovely little shop in Chepachet Rhode Island. Let's explore Brown and Hopkins Country Store in Chepachet, RI.

Brown and Hopkins Country Store is over 200 years old, being founded first in 1809.

The building has changed hands a total of 19 times over the years, moving away from utilitarian supplies like barrels of molasses and on to more modern goods.

Sometimes bucking tradition results in some pretty satisfying - and tasty - rewards. Take farmers markets. Traditionally, farmers markets are open from spring through fall, taking a break during the coldest months of the year and leaving us to find our fresh fruits, veggies, and baked goods elsewhere. This farmers market in Bristol, Rhode Island, however, has chartered a new path, welcoming vendors and shoppers year-round.

Start a new Saturday morning tradition, if you haven't already, with a visit to the year-round Farmers Market at Mount Hope Farm in Bristol.

Held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the only thing that changes with the seasons is where you'll explore vendor booths. The barn hosts the farmers market in the winter, so you can stay cozy while you shop.

During the warmer months, the farmers market moves outdoors, where you can soak up the sun and enjoy live entertainment on select weekends.
