Over the past few years, the craft beer scene has boomed across the country – and that certainly includes Rhode Island. The state is scattered with great breweries large and small, and you've almost certainly tried a few of their brews if you're a beer drinker, but have you gone behind the scenes to see where the magic happens? These five Rhode Island breweries all offer tours of their operations that are absolutely worth your time. Please note that quite a few other Ocean State breweries offer tastings, but here we're focusing just on those that offer tours.
1. Newport Storm Brewery, Newport
Newport Storm Brewery was started by college friends in 1999, and since then has produced nearly 100 unique beers. They also expanded to produce Thomas Tew Rum as well in 2006. They're open for tours and tastings Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday noon to 5:00 p.m., and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 6:00 p.m. Find them at 293 JT Connell Hwy., Newport, RI 02840.
2. Foolproof Brewing Company, Pawtucket
Foolproof Brewery makes some amazing beers (and their graphic design is just as good). Need proof?
They've expanded their facility three times and sell beer in seven states! They offer several tours on Saturdays, as well as tastings Thursdays–Sundays. Find them at 241 Grotto Ave., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
3. Ravenous Brewing Company, Woonsocket
This tiny nano-brewery has been in operation since 2012, producing only the finest small-batch beers. They're open Thursday–Sunday for tastings, and you can schedule a tour by reaching out in advance. Find them at 840 Cumberland Hill Rd. #10, Woonsocket, RI 02895.
4. Bucket Brewery, Pawtucket
(Note: as of September 2020, this brewery is permanently closed.) This brewery is only a few years old but it's already made a big splash in the Rhode Island beer scene. They're open for fairly limited hours Thursday–Sunday, and will do tours on request as staffing allows. Find them at 00 Carver St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
5. Crooked Current Brewery, Pawtucket
The smallest brewery in the smallest state and the only female-run Rhode Island brewery, Crooked Current turns out beers with wild flavors like s'mores and oatmeal raisin. They're open Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons, and you can enjoy an informal tour anytime during those hours. Visit at 560 Mineral Spring Ave., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
