When the weather turns balmy and you feel like getting some fresh air in your lungs, there’s no better way to satisfy the itch to explore the outdoors than this scenic rail trail in Rhode Island. Here’s why you should try out the East Bay Bike Path as soon as possible.
The East Bay Bike Path is perhaps Rhode Island’s best-known rail trail, but that doesn’t make it any less spectacular.
This 14-mile paved path follows the shores of Narragansett Bay all the way from Bristol to India Point Park in Providence. It’s a popular path for all ages, and accommodates cyclists, walkers, and the occasional roller blader.
Before it was a bike path, this route was an active railway. First opened in 1855, it served as a primary route for New Haven Railroad for about 75 years. You can still spot plenty of the original tracks alongside the route if you keep your eyes peeled.
The East Bay Bike Path is part of a wider network of trails called the East Coast Greenway. Incredibly, you can actually hop on the East Bay Bike Path and ride (or walk) all the way to Florida!
Even if you’re not in the mood for a cross-country trip, there’s still plenty to see and do on this rail trail right here in Rhode Island. Along the path’s southern point in Bristol, you can visit the Rhode Island Audubon Society's Environmental Education Center and check out a full natural history museum and aquarium, as well as embark on an independent nature walk or guided tour.
The East Bay Pike Path is one of this state’s most scenic walking and cycling routes. Check it out as soon as you can!
