When you're itching for an adventure, consider journeying to these mill ruins in Oakland, Rhode Island,
Hidden in the village of Oakland in Burrillville, the ruins of the Oakland Mill offer a glimpse of a time long gone. Little remains of the mill except for a shell of what once was and a building that used to house offices.
If you're like me and enjoy documenting your adventures, you'll definitely want to pack your camera.
Getting to these incredible ruins is pretty easy. You'll find two trails off of Mill Street in Oakland that lead to the former mill that's perched above a dam and creates a breathtaking cascade.
The story begins when John Ross built a dam across the Clear River in 1849. Just two years later, he constructed a stone mill.
Homes for the mill's workers were also built nearby as Oakland became a thriving village.
The following years were all about expansion and by 1870, the mill had grown with an eastern wing and a tower. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1882.
Over the years, the mill changed ownership numerous times and produced everything from woolen goods and yarn to hosiery and textiles.
If you plan to visit the mill ruins in Rhode Island, you'll notice an abandoned building. While some have explored the former office building, you'll probably want to avoid following in their footsteps.
There are reports of the roof collapsing and the floors caving in, which can pose a significant risk if you attempt to explore inside the building.
As time passes, the ruins themselves continue to change, too. Not long ago, for example, a smoke stack that towered over the landscape collapsed.
