Do you ever feel like you've hit the jackpot when you've uncovered a Rhode Island attraction you didn't know about or vaguely remember hearing about in passing? We have so many gems in Rhode Island that it's not too surprising when we overlook a few. However, the Veterans Memorial Museum, a hidden gem museum in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, should sit atop every Rhode Islander's bucket list.
The Veterans Memorial Museum in Woonsocket has a straightforward yet powerful mission, "to honor veterans and preserve history."
The museum is visible in the community, too, with staff members visiting local schools and other organizations.
Although it officially opened its doors on Veteran's Day in 2015, the Veterans Memorial Museum, in some ways, began many years earlier when founder Glenn Dusablon was a child.
As a young boy of nine, Dusablon began collecting military and war artifacts. What started as a traveling display, when he was an adult, grew into the Veterans Memorial Museum.
Today, the museum pays homage to service members of all wars and displays thousands of artifacts.
Many of the artifacts have been donated while others have been loaned to the museum.
The experience offers more than the opportunity to get a fascinating glimpse at history from the American Revolution to the present day. You'll also learn about some of those veterans who have served throughout our history.
Every artifact has a story, and guests give top marks to Dusablon for his extensive knowledge of history and the collection and for his willingness to share stories.
Although the museum is small, most recommend allotting a minimum of an hour for your visit.
It's a great way to pay tribute to those who served this Memorial Day.
