Are you dying to explore Rhode Island and brush up on your creepy, local lore? Check out these three ghost stories that happened around Foster.
1. Smithfield Cemetery
In the 1950s, out in the Smithfield Historic Cemetery in Greenville, a young woman by the name of Audrey Greenland had been dabbling in the occult. She was performing spells and seances to try and contact her lost childhood friend, Laura. Laura had died completely unintentionally while playing with Audrey on the jungle gym.
The family claimed after the event that while attempting to contact Laura, Audrey had been attacked by something which resembled a young girl.
Ed and Loraine Warren investigated this sighting through the New England Society for Psychic Research.
The cemetery is located on the hill behind OId Country Road Elementary School behind a stone wall.
2. Ruffstone Tavern
Featured on Ghost Hunters, this tavern is known locally for paranormal activity. Before being closed in 2014, Ruffstone Tavern was the second oldest operating tavern in Rhode Island and was home to all sorts of unique features. For example, in the basement, you will find a boarded-up tunnel that leads to downtown Providence. It was used during Prohibition to smuggle contraband alcohol.
The claims of the paranormal activity here range from sightings of shadows, the sounds of moaning, glass bowls falling, and the appearance of fog indoors. Sightings do tend to cluster around the basement and some witnesses have reported seeing a man in a top hat with a pipe.
3. Ram Tail Mill
You’ll have to walk through the woods a bit to reach this abandoned location. The site of the Ramtail Factory, once a thriving mill, is said to be haunted by the ghost of its former night watchman. Peleg Walkman died on the job in May 1822.
The townspeople found his body hanging from the very bell rope he used to call in the shift change. Whether the watchman was murdered or took his own life remains up for debate. However, Peleg’s ghost is said to still be seen performing his walks of the factory.
To find this spot, go West on Route 6 and get off on Ramtail Road in Foster. The trail starts after the cemetery and just before the little bridge over Dolly Cole Brook.
