Rhode Island has its fair share of churches, many of them well known. But most people focus on the big Providence and Newport churches and overlook the many gorgeous and historic houses of worship elsewhere in the state. We've found one in Wakefield that is particularly lovely.
St. Francis of Assisi in Wakefield is recognizable for its distinctive and beautiful architecture based on churches in Assisi, Italy.
The circular stained glass over the door, in particular, is reminiscent of Italian churches.

All of the stained glass in this church is exceptionally beautiful, in fact.
The interior is stunning without being overly ornate, marrying a country feel with the elegance you expect from a Catholic church.
The busy congregation that gathers here holds plenty of wonderful events, from a blessing of the animals to festival holiday gatherings.
Residents of and visitors to Wakefield have admired this gorgeous building for decades. And for church members, it is not just a landmark but a spiritual home.
