If you like being up high, this is definitely a trip you need to take. Featuring a slightly terrifying jaunt across a 240-foot suspension bridge, the hike is not for the faint of heart. This day trip to the coast will satisfy the explorer in you, and may just make your stomach drop in the process.
Located in the Oregon Coastal Range near Lincoln City, the Drift Creek Falls hike is a 2.7-mile out and back trail that features a stunning waterfall.
Before you get there, you pass through a lovely restored covered bridge, a treat in itself.
Once you reach the bridge on Bear Creek Road, you have about 10 miles to continue until the Drift Creek Falls trailhead.
From there, you will hike mostly downhill to the rather noisy waterfall waiting at the end of the journey.
To get even more great views of the falls, cross the suspension bridge leading you across the canyon.
The 240-foot long bridge is set 100 feet above the canyon, which is just enough to drop your stomach.
Even if you don't like heights, it's hard not to enjoy the great views of the 80-foot Drift Creek waterfall as well as the upper forest canopy from the bridge.
While the bridge does have a bit of bounce to it, it is quite safe and is anchored into the walls of the canyon to support over 150,000 pounds.
This is one trip that will leave you mesmerized, as there is not much like having a bird's eye view of the forest.
While the trail is primarily used for hiking, it is also suitable for running and fishing, and is open year round. Leashed dogs are also allowed. To get there, take Oregon 18 to Bear Creek Road. Parking requires a Northwest Forest Pass, which is $5 at the parking area.
