Creativity and Pittsburgh go hand-in-hand. After all, there are so many opportunities throughout the city to nurture and to explore our creativity through a number of artistic genres. Like glassblowing. Watch seasoned artists at work; view artists' exhibits, and create your own glassblowing project at Pittsburgh Glass Center.
Channel your creativity when you visit Pittsburgh Glass Center, on Penn Avenue, a unique destination that is, among other things, a glass studio, an education center, and an art gallery.
The non-profit provides an abundance of opportunities for members of the public to learn the art of glassblowing, to watch glassblowing demonstrations, and to view artists' exhibits.
If you're not so sure glassblowing is for you, give it a whirl at one of the Make-It-Now Workshops. The 15-minute workshops allow you to get a feel for the art of glassblowing while creating a unique project.
Some Make-It-Now Workshops welcome visitors of all ages. (Generally, artists must be at least 14 to participate in classes, although the center often offers workshops for students in sixth grade and up.)
Walks-in may be allowed at some workshops while others may require pre-registration.
However, if you really want to learn the art of glassblowing, sign up for one of the Glass Center's classes. Classes are available in four to eight week sessions, or you can opt for a one-week intensive class.
Classes may cover such topics as an introduction to stained glass, mosaics, and hot glass.
You can even just visit Pittsburgh Glass Center to see what it's all about. While entry is free, a $5 donation is welcomed.
A self-guided tour will allow you to explore at your own pace, to meet some of the artists, and to decide whether you want to try glassblowing for yourself.
Discover the beauty of glass art at Pittsburgh Glass Center, open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
