So, next time you're looking for a family adventure, check out these hands-on destinations in Pittsburgh.
1. Carnegie Science Center – 1 Allegheny Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212
You can easily spend all day - or an entire weekend - exploring the Carnegie Science Center and Highmark Sports Works. Kids can expend plenty of energy in Sports Works, which features batting cages, racing lanes, and a climbing wall for all ages. The Science Center itself also features presentations throughout the day, a Rangos Giant Theater ,and a planetarium. Outside, you can walk through the U.S.S. Requin. The Carnegie Science Center welcomes visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
2. Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh – 10 Children's Way, Pittsburgh, PA 15212
Don't let the name fool you. Family members of all ages can have a ton of fun at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.
Check out the changing exhibits, such as Tough Art and Destination Empathy. Get your hands dirty with clay or by painting a picture. The Children's Museum features an assortment of exhibits and activities for kids of all ages.
The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
3. Carnegie Museum of Natural History – 4400 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213
Travel through the centuries as you explore the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Permanent exhibits include Dinosaurs in Their Time and the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems. Kids can also dig for fossils at the Bone Hunters' Quarry. And, that's just the beginning. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
4. National Aviary – 700 Arch Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212
Watch penguins at feeding time. Admire bald eagles as they sleep in their nests. And, meet adorable flamingo chicks. The National Aviary in Pittsburgh offers so much to do that the time will simply slip away. Stroll through the aviary, where you'll get a glimpse at the more than 500 birds. Plan a visit to the National Aviary, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
5. Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens – 1 Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, PA 15213
Spend a leisurely day strolling through the botanical gardens at Phipps Conservatory. The conservatory also features rotating exhibits, such as Natural Edible Plants & Botanical Art. Kids can participate in discovery programs and summer camps. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
6. Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
Come face-to-face with land and sea animals at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, which regularly hosts family-friendly events and educational programs. Enjoy a ride through the park on a train or watch the kids play at one of the play areas. The zoo and aquarium offer plenty to do and to see and feature several eateries. Stop by the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
7. Heinz History Center – 1212 Smallman Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
Journey through Pittsburgh's rich history when you visit the Heinz History Center. Explore the current exhibits which include Mister Rogers Neighborhood, The Apollo 11 Mission, and Pittsburgh: A tradition of innovation. See an authentic car from the Racer (pictured below) or attend a special event. The Heinz History Center welcomes guests daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
8. Arcade Comedy Theater – 943 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
Laugh the hours away at the Arcade Comedy Theater, which offers workshops, classes, and shows. If you have kids, head to the theater for the Penny Arcade the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. The Penny Arcade is an improv show geared toward kids between five and 12. Even better? Kids and their parents are invited to take part in the fun on stage.
