Philadelphia is a foodie city, and we're known for our incredible dining scene. With Iron Chefs joining mom-and-pop restaurants, it's no wonder Philadelphia's restaurant scene is among the best in the world. If you've spent any time at all in Philadelphia, chances are you've wandered into America's oldest farmers market at Reading Terminal, and chances are it's one of your favorite places in Philly.
Reading Terminal Market has been a Philadelphia landmark ever since it first opened in 1892.
Dozens of vendors have established legendary eateries and shops in America's oldest farmers market.
When you walk in to RTM for the first time, you might be overwhelmed. How do you know where to go first?
Well, if it's breakfast time, hit up Dutch Eating Place for a hearty farm breakfast that will be sure to fill you up.
Or, stand in the very long (but very worth it!) line for fresh donuts from Beiler's Bakery.
If it's lunchtime, you can't go wrong with a specialty grilled cheese from MeltKraft.
Although, if you've never had a sandwich from DiNic's, that needs to be your first move. After all, it was named Best Sandwich In America by the Travel Channel.
It can be hard to get a seat, so you could end up making friends with the people you're sitting with.
After your meal, head to any of the dessert stalls, like Termini Bros, Fourth Street Cookie Co., or Bassett's Ice Cream.
You should also check out the candy stores scattered throughout the market. The Pennsylvania General Store has old time candy and chocolates, while Mueller's will sell you a chocolate covered onion.
If you're a foodie, you'll love Reading Terminal Market for more than their prepared foods.
Fresh meat, seafood, produce, and more will help you stock your fridge for upcoming gourmet meals.
You can even find cookbooks, condiments, and spices here! This is every chef's paradise.
And the best part? Most of the food comes from local farmers, just like it has for decades.
Over a century of gourmet foods, famous restaurants, and timeless recipes have turned Reading Terminal Market into one of the top destinations for foodies in the entire world - and we're lucky enough to walk past it nearly every day! We're all guilty of heading to our favorite stands when we go there - some of my favorites are MeltKraft, Herschel's, and Beiler's - but next time, challenge yourself to try something new. After all, you never know what you'll find!
