German Christmas Markets began in the late middle ages. The Nuremberg Christkindlsmarket is the most famous one in the world, and it began when farmers began selling crops during Advent in the mid-1500s. Since that time, famous Christmas Markets have popped up all over the world, modeled after the German Christkindlsmarkets, bringing some European culture to foreign lands.
In America, they can be found in cities and states across the nation, but one of the most famous is located right here in Philadelphia! Vendors in wooden booths gather to sell a variety of gifts, crafts, toys, and German foods and drinks. If you've never been to the Philadelphia Christmas Market at Christmas Village, set aside a few days this year to really explore this wonderful place.
Christmas Village in Philadelphia runs from Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve. This year, it was opened up by the original Christkind from Nuremberg!
Here in Love Park, you'll find more than 80 wooden booths where vendors are selling their handcrafted and authentic wares.
Christmas Village is the perfect place to pick up a unique holiday gift, a few traditional ornaments, some handcrafted jewelry, and more.
For some, the best part of the Philadelphia Christmas Market is indulging on traditional European sweets and foods, such as waffles, gingerbread, and, of course, bratwurst.
Each weekend is themed - coming up on December 2nd and 3rd, join Christmas Village for their 10th Anniversary. The weekend is full of performances... and cake.
On December 9th and 10th, join the village in celebrating its heritage with German American Weekend.
Try a Schnitzel, some pretzels, or a glass of hot mulled wine. The highlight of the weekend is certainly the German performances on the main stage.
On December 16th and 17th, the market is hosting Make A Wish charity weekend. Buy a wooden heart for the Wish Wall and help make a child's dreams come true.
Christmas Village in Philadelphia is perfect for families, and the carousel is a big draw for both the young and young-at-heart. There are several dog-friendly days, too!
Be sure to keep up on the event's calendar, because there are performances and themed days all month long.
Here's their Events Calendar to help you plan your visit.
