If you've ever visited the town of Kecksburg you may have seen it: the acorn-shaped brown lump that sits on a pedestal next to the town firehouse. It serves as a monument to an unexplained object that fell from the sky on December 9, 1965, almost exactly 50 years ago to the day.
On the fateful occasion, people in at least six U.S. states and in Ontario, Canada reported seeing a fireball streak across the sky, and some even heard a sonic BOOM. Debris fell across portions of Michigan and Ohio, causing small fires.
The UFO landed in the woods of Kecksburg, PA. Within an hour of its landing, military personnel arrived, blockaded the area, and removed the object; it was never to be seen again.
Eyewitnesses in Kecksburg reported that the object was about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, with inscrutable markings around the bottom. There has been plenty of speculation about the Kecksburg UFO. One of the more popular theories, supported by a 2011 episode of Discovery Channel's "Ancient Aliens," theorizes that it was Die Glocke, an experimental Nazi anti-gravity device.
Authorities officially identified the object as a meteorite, but no one buys that. Why would the military arrive and immediately remove a fallen meteorite?Aliens from outer space just seemed like the most rational explanation. So, the residents of Kecksburg started throwing an annual festival to celebrate extraterrestrial life.
Another theory that's been thrown around is that the UFO was a fallen satellite; NASA released a statement claiming its researchers had reached this conclusion in 2008.Now, two researchers have come forward with a theory that they believe to be fairly air tight: the Kecksburg UFO was a top-secret American spy satellite, sent to watch the Soviet Union from space. This would explain the secrecy shrouding its existence.
Check out this latest theory in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Below is a video in case you're interested in learning more about this bizarro story.
How do you explain the unidentified flying object that fell in Kecksburg? And more importantly, have you ever been to the UFO Festival?
