Christmas in Pennsylvania is simply enchanting. Celebrations aren't hard to come by either, no matter where we live in Pennsylvania. We can find a bit of everything, from flashy light shows and quaint neighborhood festivals to big-city celebrations. If you prefer an old-fashioned Christmas, plan a trip to an Olde Time Christmas in Jim Thorpe. Affectionately known as the Switzerland of Pennsylvania, this darling small town transforms into a magical Christmastime destination each December, making it an ideal destination for a hearty dose of holiday cheer.
Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, Jim Thorpe, dotted with Victorian architecture and sweeping mountain views, exudes old-fashioned charm. While it's a must-add to your itinerary any time of the year, the small mountain town is particularly enchanting during the holidays. Try to time your visit for perhaps the best Christmas festival in Pennsylvania.
For three glorious weekends (Saturday and Sunday) in December, Jim Thorpe hosts an Olde Time Christmas PA, a magical celebration full of fun, family-friendly activities, and events. The celebration officially begins on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, at Josiah White Park. The evening will feature performances by the Jim Thorpe cheerleaders, chorus, and high school band, all leading up to an appearance by Santa at 6 p.m.
Get in the holiday spirit with a tour of Jim Thorpe, perhaps sprinkled in fresh snow, on a horse-drawn carriage ride. Carolers will stroll through the town, singing classic holiday tunes. Carve out some time, too, for an evening walk to admire the decorations and twinkling lights.
For a one-of-a-kind holiday event, climb aboard the Santa Claus Special with the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. The train will leave the station in Jim Thorpe three times daily from Nov. 24 through Dec. 24, 2024. Santa and Mrs. Claus typically join in the holiday fun.
If you're like me and have a tough time finding unique gifts, explore the downtown shops that sell everything from gifts and toys to clothes and antiques. Pop into Mauch Chunk 5 & 10, an old-school five-and-dime that's sure to stir nostalgia. One of my favorite things about five-and-dimes, especially at Christmas, is all of the unique trinkets and old-fashioned gifts that make the perfect stocking stuffers.
