If you’ve ever been to The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, you know it’s all about the kids. Sure, we adults can sit and watch them play, create, explore, and discover, but the entire museum is built around children and their growth. Children 10 and older, who may have matured out of some of the activities at the museum, can now spend their time at The Museum Lab in Pittsburgh.
The Museum Lab, right next door to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, offers kids 10 and older the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with Pittsburgh’s makers and to explore their creative sides.
Tucked in the restored former Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny County, the museum welcomes kids and their parents every day to explore its studio, make, and tech labs.
Kiddos can make — either digitally or physically — a variety of projects at the Make Lab, including clothes and furniture. They can even create their own video game.
The Studio Lab, on the other hand, gives kids the chance to channel their creativity through art while the Tech Lab provides the opportunity to learn about an array of subjects, including how to create your own audio recording.
What makes Museum Lab stand out is its partnership with various organizations, such as the Entertainment Technology Center of Carnegie Mellon University, that allow visitors to connect with artists, makers, teachers, and others right at the museum.
In addition to welcoming visitors daily, Museum Lab also hosts workshops and summer studios. Drop-off workshops, for example, are usually held on Saturdays and are designed for kids between 10 and 14 years old.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. An Instagram ad caught my eye during a late-night scroll session and I was intrigued by the colorful compartments and versatility of the bag, which can be carried as a duffle or as a backpack (I prefer the backpack for even weight distribution and airport navigation.) Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. The Carnegie Science Center promises hours of fun and learning. The multi-level facility features plenty of hands-on activities, shows, and special events.
While you're having fun, you'll also learn some fun facts. Check out the Science of Bikes, for example, an exhibit that illustrates how bikes work, their role in society, and their history. You'll even have the opportunity to play the Bike Body Xylophone.
Try your hand at rock climbing a 25-foot wall. Test your batting speed. Or, play an oversized (way oversized) game of Operation.
You can spend hours at Highmark SportsWork. Don't worry if you need a break. There are seats and vending machines if you want to grab a quick snack and a drink.
Please note, if you're going specifically for the rock climbing wall, call ahead to ensure that it is open. As of January 2023, it is closed.
The Carnegie Science Center allows visitors to explore different worlds at SpacePlace. Step into a simulation of the International Space Station. Or, launch your own foam rocket into the air. That, of course, is just the beginning.
This indoor play area in Pittsburgh also welcomes guests to check out the starry sky. SkyWatch offers the unique opportunity to gaze through a telescope in the planetarium. The special event is held on select evenings throughout the year.

Stop for a selfie with R2-D2 and C3PO in the Robot Hall of Fame. RoboWorld also hosts such interactive activities as basketball (and a robot shooting basketball).
