The Moravian Book Shop, located in historic downtown Bethlehem, is not only the oldest book store in America, but it is also quite possibly the oldest continuously running book shop in the world. It was opened almost three centuries ago in 1745 by the Moravian Church, which has a strong presence in the area and has been operating ever since, though it has changed location a few times. The shop is also home to the Moravian College book store.
Moravian Book Shop specializes in Moravian Stars, which are also known as Advent Stars. They are intricate, decorative star-shaped structures with 26 points.
Moravian Book Shop is so large that it takes up space in four different buildings and holds a variety of goods beyond books alone, such as the decadent chocolates for sale at The Retro Deli.
It has also partnered with Lost Tavern Brewing so customers can purchase beer to go or fill a growler right on site. On top of that. Randevoo, a food truck, opened up its brick and mortar location inside Moravian Book Shop. Take a break from browsing the bookshelves and order some delicious Asian fusion fare.
The shop also hosts frequent events such as discussion groups and author signings, such as this one with Tanisha Shontae.
Moravian is also famous for having one of the largest and most impressive selections of Christmas ornaments and decor, available year-round.
But of course, the best thing about visiting this historic book shop is curling up in one of their comfortable chairs with a good book. Sometimes there's nothing better than finding a cozy spot and losing yourself in a good book!
