Pittsburgh boasts some pretty amazing attractions. Whether we're in the mood for action-packed adventure or a leisurely afternoon, we can find something that fits the bill in the Burgh. Take this contemporary art museum, for example, which just might be the most unique museum in Pittsburgh. Next time you have a few free hours, stroll through the museum that houses an inspirational collection of installation art.
Embrace the world of installation and performance art at The Mattress Factory, a unique museum that first opened in Pittsburgh in 1977.
Since it opened, the museum has hosted hundreds of aspiring and professional artists, who have created their own masterpieces in the Mattress Factory.
Selected artists are invited to the residency program at The Mattress Factory each year. Those artists spend between a week and eight weeks at the museum, to create an installation piece.
And, the public traditionally can view the completed pieces for up to six months before the installation art is removed.
Carve out plenty of time to spend in the museum that houses both temporary and permanent art exhibits.
Permanent exhibits include the Infinity Dots Mirrored Room by Yahoi Kusama and Music For A Garden by Rolf Julius.
And, you'll probably find plenty of installations that just resonate with you. Cat parents (or if you have a dog, a bunny, a bird, or another type of pet), does the scene below look familiar?
After you've explored the museum, stop by the gift shop, where you can purchase a membership to the museum. Or, pick up souvenirs to commemorate your visit.
Explore the Mattress Factory, open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Mattress Factory is located at 505 Jacksonia St., Pittsburgh, PA 15212.
