1. Pennhurst State School and Hospital – Spring City
Pennhurst State School and Hospital, once an asylum for the mentally ill, has an ugly past with stories of patients being abused and overcrowding at the facility, which permanently shuttered in 1987. The facility is said to be haunted by the ghosts of those who suffered there. Today, Pennhurst serves as a terrifying haunted house, luring amateur ghost hunters and others who want to experience the paranormal.
2. Eagle Hotel – Waterford
Built in 1826, the Eagle Hotel now houses Sugar 'N Spice, a quaint restaurant that serves Amish food. Visitors to the former hotel tell of experiencing the paranormal, hearing a baby crying in the distance and a voice talking when no one is there. Some also say that sudden rushes of cool air often sweep past.
3. Devil's Den – Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War saw close to 51,000 injuries and deaths, many of which occurred at Devil's Den. Devil's Den, highlighted by a cluster of rocks used by sharpshooters on the battlefield, is said to be haunted by the ghosts of soldiers who died there, some of whom were buried then moved and some of whom were never buried. If you happen to visit in the early evening hours, you may notice a grey fog begin to roll over the battlefield. A bright light is seen in the mist, often followed by the sight of marching soldiers.
4. Eastern State Penitentiary – Philadelphia
Eastern State Penitentiary is said to be one of the most haunted places in Pennsylvania. The former prison, which closed in 1971, lays claim to a history of tortuous forms of punishment, including an underground solitary confinement cell and prisoners being submerged in water outside in the frigid winter months. Today, Eastern State Penitentiary is a museum that's said to be haunted by its former residents. Visitors have told of echoing voices and shadows on the wall when no one's there.
5. Railroaders Memorial Museum – Altoona
You might just run into Frank, the resident ghost at the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona. Keep your eyes peeled during your time at the museum because you just might see Frank's apparition dart out in front of you. Frank has been known to hop over the train engine at the entrance of the museum. Frank's apparition has been seen in the elevator before disappearing while some have heard the sound of laughing children when none were around.
6. Logan Inn – New Hope
Reserve a room or book a table for dinner at the Logan Inn, a charming spot with a history of the paranormal. Originally owned by the Lutz family, one family member's spirit has frequently been seen throughout the inn. Emily Lutz, wearing a long dress and smelling of lavender, has been seen in the restaurant as well as in the bathroom. But, she's most frequently seen in Room 6, her face peering out of the mirror.
7. King George II Inn – Bristol
Dine with visitors from the beyond at King George II Inn. The inn, dating back to 1681, lays claim to a variety of paranormal activity. Guests have seen a gentleman, stately dressed in a top hat and tails, strolling around the inn while others report suspicious activity, such as paintings mysteriously falling off of the walls and doors slamming when no one's there.
8. Mishler Theatre – Altoona
Guests to the Mishler Theatre often get twice the entertainment: The production on stage and, if they're lucky, a visit from a ghostly guest. One frequent ghost is said to be that of Isaac Mishler, the founder of the theater, who is seen walking around the theater as the scent of cigar smoke lingers in the air. Some have even seen him walk through the wall, where the door to his office once stood.
9. The Gettysburg Hotel – Gettysburg
Next time you're in Gettysburg, book at room at the Gettysburg Hotel, where you can embark on a ghostly tour of the most haunted sites in town. But, you might not even have to leave this historic hotel, which has sheltered presidents including Dwight D. Eisenhower, to experience the paranormal. Used as a hospital during the Civil War, the hotel still holds the spirit of a nurse, whose apparition has been seen opening drawers and moving things in the hotel. A former Civil War soldier is also said to roam the hotel's floors.
10. The Inn at Jim Thorpe – Jim Thorpe
Reserve room 210 at the Inn at Jim Thorpe - if you dare. Former guests tell of being awakened in the middle of the night to the strong smell of smoke. Others went to sleep at night with chairs sitting as they are supposed to, only to wake up to find them overturned. Orbs and shadows have unexpectedly appeared in guests' photographs and the televisions in the inn's rooms have inexplicably turned on and off.
