'Tis the time of the year for ghosts and goblins to roam Pittsburgh's neighborhoods, ringing doorbells and hoping for a treat rather than a trick. But, if you prefer to experience something truly terrifying, check out these eight genuinely haunted places around Pittsburgh where you might just come-face-to-face with a real ghost.

1. Chatham University – 1 Woodland Rd, Pittsburgh

Chatham University's resident ghost - the Blue Lady of Woodland Hall - has become so popular that the university holds regular ghost tours for those interested in the paranormal. A mental health institution once stood on the site of the current Chatham University. A young woman in a blue dress, supposedly a former patient, has been seen sitting on the edge of students' beds just staring at them in the morning.

2. Point Park Playhouse – 222 Craft Avenue Pittsburgh

Tragedy befell a woman and her children on the very spot the Pittsburgh Playhouse now stands. A devastating fire ripped through their row house, killing both mom and the kids. Visitors tell of hearing the grieving mother wailing throughout the theater. The apparition of a bride, who allegedly murdered her brand new groom and his mistress then leaped from the balcony on their wedding day, is also said to pace back and forth on the balcony.

3. Broughton School – Pittsburgh

South Park played an important role in the Whiskey Rebellion. In fact, many innocent civilians who died during the rebellion were killed on the very spot on which the now abandoned Broughton School still stands. Perhaps that's why the school is said to be haunted. Witnesses tell of hearing children's voices begging them not to leave, of doors and windows opening and slamming shut, and of shadows running from room to room.

4. Coulterville Cemetery – Coulterville Road, McKeesport

Listen carefully for the sound of tiny footsteps and voices as you enter Coulterville Cemetery. The voices - according to local lure - are those of the children who perished when the orphanage in which they lived burned to the ground. Cemetery visitors tell haunting tales of seeing the orphanage in flames from their rear view mirrors and of tiny hand prints appearing on their car windows upon leaving the cemetery.

5. Resurrection Cemetery – 100 Resurrection Road, Moon

Venture into Resurrection Cemetery and look for the lone black tombstone, known as Damien's Grave. Tread carefully and respectfully as you visit. Do not defile the grave as some have. Do not pick flowers from near the grave as some have. Local lure tells that those who have disrespected Damien's Grave have suffered serious injuries - even death - on the ride out of the cemetery.

6. Connellsville Carnegie Library – 299 South Pittsburgh Street, Connellsville

Don't be too alarmed if a book suddenly flies off of the shelf at the Connellsville Carnegie Library. The weird noises - footsteps when no one is around and the apparition of a couple - are simply from what many believe are the spirits that haunt the library. The library sits upon what was once a cemetery. While the bodies were all said to have been moved from the cemetery before construction on the library began, some may have remained, leaving their spirits to roam the Carnegie Library.

7. St. Nicholas Church – 24 Maryland Avenue, Millvale

A peaceful haven, St. Nicholas Church in Millvalle is said to be haunted by the spirit of a former priest who roams the church at night, usually around midnight, in an attempt to repent for his sins. The apparition first appeared in the 1930s. A painter was working in the church at around midnight when he felt a rush of cold air and turned to see an upset man pacing back and forth. Some say that if you visit the church around the midnight hour, you'll feel that same rush of cold air and see that same agitated apparition even today.

8. Piney Fork Road, South Park Township, PA

Piney Fork Road is said to be the site of several tragedies, including the death of a young woman who lost her life late at night while racing her Corvette. Those who dare to drive down the road at night have claimed to hear the screeching of tires and the screams of a young woman.
