Some of the most beautiful artistic works and architecture throughout Pittsburgh undoubtedly reside in the many spectacular churches in the area. Each church has its own unique qualities and beauty. This beautiful church in Pittsburgh, for example, is an absolute work of art.
Discover both the rich history and the pure beauty of Calvary United Methodist Church that dates back to 1893. Only two years prior, worshipers attended services at the church on Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh.
But fire ripped through the community destroying an entire block, including the church. When rebuilding, worshipers decided to build two new churches - one in Shadyside and the Calvary United Methodist Church on the North Side.
Less than 150 church members banded together to help raise funds for and build what is today among the most beautiful churches in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh church lays claim to 189 Tiffany windows, including three of the world's largest Tiffany windows at the time they were installed in 1895.
The nearly 200 Tiffany windows underwent restoration a decade ago at a cost of nearly a million dollars. Visitors around the world still visit the church to admire its collection of Tiffany windows.
Reminiscent of Europe's grand cathedrals, the church has such awe-inspiring features as hand-carved pews, each still donning their original pew pads from 1896...
as well as a solid oak ceiling stained in cherry and hand-carved gargoyles.
Calvary United Methodist Church hosts numerous annual events, including a Summer Open House (to view the Tiffany windows), a church family picnic, and vacation Bible school.
