Here are eight of the most relaxing places in Pittsburgh (and a bit beyond).
Pittsburgh's a pretty hectic city, especially during the workweek. Sometimes, we all just need to get away, to find a quiet corner to recharge. Mellon Square provides an idyllic spot to eat lunch, to read, or to just watch the water tumbling in the picturesque fountains. Even better? The picture-perfect, one-acre park is nestled in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh.

If you're on the hunt for a really secluded spot, head to Allegheny Islands State Park. But, you can only get there by boat. The tranquil state park offers unmarked trails (so, wear appropriate footwear). Spend a few hours exploring the island, boating, or wildlife watching.

Relaxation and waterfalls pretty much go hand-in-hand. Journey to Buttermilk Falls Natural Area in Beaver Falls. Embark on a five to 10 minute stroll - depending on how quickly you walk - to the waterfall that tumbles 40 feet. On warm days, dip your feet in the pool the waterfall creates. Or, walk behind the waterfall for a unique view.

Lace up your hiking boots for a leisurely stroll through Dead Man's Hollow Conservation Area, a lush 450-acre natural area in McKeesport. The scenic area boasts plenty of natural beauty, including scenic vistas, fields of wildflowers, and woodlands. Climb and enchanted staircase. And, discover abandoned ruins of a former factory.

Stroll along the manicured paths of the historic Allegheny Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Pittsburgh. Spanning 300 lush acres, Allegheny Cemetery is the final resting place of such notable Pittsburghers as actress Lillian Russell, actor Don Brockett, and songwriter Stephen Foster.

Find relaxation with a visit to Allegheny County's sole waterfall. Nestled in Fall Run Park, the waterfall sits at the end of a picturesque one-mile trail. Stroll along footbridges and over streams on your way to the waterfall that tumbles 25 feet. Admire the view from the base. Then, climb the staircase for overhead views.

Spend a few hours wandering among wildflowers at the Wildflower Reserve in Raccoon Creek State Park. Embark on the 1.5 mile Jennings Trail that will lead you past more than 700 species of wildflowers. The trail also offers opportunities to admire the local wildlife, including deer and raccoons.

Find solitude among nature at Sahli Nature Park in Beaver Falls. The 90-acre nature park boasts ponds, a waterfall, and swings. Of course, you'll have plenty of opportunity to check out the local wildlife, to explore the trails, and to cross picturesque footbridges.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. Enchanting pieces of the past, like covered bridges, dot the Pennsylvania landscape. We’re quite fortunate to have more than 200 covered bridges in Pennsylvania, although that number has dipped from 1,500 over the years. While Lancaster County boasts the most covered bridges, Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas also have quite a few covered bridges, including the Herline Covered Bridge near Pittsburgh.

To reach the longest covered bridge in Pennsylvania, we’d have to journey more than three hours to the town of Port Royal, the home of the Pomeroy Academia Covered Bridge (pictured below).
Did you know that Herline Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge near Pittsburgh? It's worthy of a spot on your bucket list, don't you think? We can't think of a better way to experience a piece of Pennsylvania's storied history than with a visit to its many covered bridges.
The picturesque covered bridge spans an impressive 278 feet. However, one of the other longest bridges in the state doesn’t take quite as long to reach.
Herline Covered Bridge in Bedford County, just under two hours from downtown Pittsburgh, is just one of 14 covered bridges in the county. If you’re driving to see Herline Covered Bridge, consider touring some or all of them.
While you're in the charming town of Bedford, Pennsylvania, consider touring a bit. The town is well-known for its rich history, including Jean-Bonnet Tavern. It's said to be one of the most haunted places in Pennsylvania.
Built in 1902 in a Burr Truss-style, the covered bridge measures 136 feet long and nine feet wide. The covered bridge underwent renovations in the 1990s, which means today vehicles can still travel over it.
Don't forget your camera. While you won't need a ton of time to visit this covered bridge near Pittsburgh, you will be treated to plenty of photo-worthy moments.
If you’ve got a few extra hours in your day, set off on a self-guided tour on the Bedford County Visitors Bureau’s Covered Bridge Driving Tour. It will take you to nine of the area’s 14 bridges.
If you've been looking for covered bridges near me, you've just found some of the best. While the self-guided tour is picture-perfect any time of the year, make an effort to drive it during the fall, too, when the foliage is at its peak.
The tour spans 40 miles, and the visitor’s bureau recommends allotting at least 90 minutes for your journey. However, it may take longer, depending on how long you spend at each bridge and if you make other stops along the way.
