Want to explore a unique park in Oregon? Head to Portland's Forest Park, which provides phenomenal recreation opportunities all year long. This is one of my favorite places in Oregon to run, hike, and walk. There is so much terrain to explore and it's fabulous year-round. In fact, you'll love walking the same trail week after week and watching as the plants and trees change with the seasons. There's lots of tree cover so rainy day walks are an option, too. Many people bring along their furry friends for outdoor adventures along these trails. My pup Bucky loves to zoom up the hills — and I love how he helps me along via his leash!
This is a massive park. There are over 40 access points to the trails of Forest Park. There are 30 miles of seasonal and perennial streams located in the park.
The park is situated on the northeast slope of Portland’s West Hills and the southernmost section of the Tualatin Mountain Range.
According to the City of Portland, "Forest Park, at 5,200 acres, provides critical refuge for hundreds of native wildlife and plant species and acts as an important air and water filter."
There are more than 80 miles of trails available to explore, including the popular Lower Macleay Trail, Wildwood Trail, Wild Cherry, Wildwood, Alder, Dogwood Loop, Forest Park Ridge Trail, and Dogwood Wild Cherry Loop Trail.
I love walking along the streams and looking for wildlife.
Every season is beautiful in Forest Park, but fall is especially gorgeous.
Along the way, you might come across this cool stone seat with animals carved into it.
Another unique feature is the ruins of this interesting stone structure.
Locals call this building the "Witch's Castle."
It can be found along the path that can be accessed from the bridge at NW Thurman Avenue and NW 29th Avenue on the way up towards Pittock Mansion.
Many visitors have left their mark on Witch's Castle.
For more information about the park, visit the City of Portland Forest Park website. If your visit to the park includes a drive, you may want to stock up on car-friendly snacks and/or bring a lunch to enjoy along the way.
We'd love to know how you enjoyed your trip to Forest Park, so please leave a comment. Also, feel free to share your favorite off-the-beaten-path spots in Oregon. We are always looking for new places to explore.
