Oregon is home to some magnificent man-made wonders, including many beautiful lighthouses, buildings, and bridges. The Beaver State boasts the longest continuous truss bridge in the country, but also has several other stunning bridges that are worth checking out. The highest bridge in Oregon is located on the coast, and you're going to want to take a look!
You'll find Oregon's tallest bridge about five miles north of Brookings, along Highway 101 on the coast.
At 345 feet, the Thomas Creek Bridge is a pretty impressive structure.
The Warren deck truss bridge enables traffic to travel right over a deep ravine. It's 956 feet long, and 30 feet wide.
This photo from the Oregon Department of Transportation is one of the few available that truly show the size and scope of the bridge.
The bridge was designed by Ivan D. Merchant, who also designed the famous Astoria-Megler bridge. It was completed in 1961.
Because of its location, most photographers capture views like this, from a trail that ends at a cliff overlooking the ravine.
You can also see the bridge from below, from Thomas Creek Beach.
Many travelers driving across the Thomas Creek Bridge don't understand its significance. As you drive across, it doesn't feel as though you're suspended high above the ground below. The steel frame towers provide plenty of stabilization. More than 5,000 cars cross this bridge daily.
We have to admit that when the bridge is surrounded by fog, it's a little bit intimidating!
Have you driven over the Thomas Creek Bridge? While you're in the area, check out Whaleshead Beach, and take a trip to these hidden sand dunes. There's plenty to see along the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor!
