It's raining in Oregon pretty much all the time (OK, maybe we're exaggerating a wee-tad), so naturally you find yourself a little stir crazy every now and then if you're stuck in the house during a big storm (we know, we know, you probably don't even care about a typical shower.) But in case you were looking for something to do with the family that doesn't depend on Oregon's unpredictable weather, we picked out some great rainy day activities that everyone should love.
9) Drift Creek Trail, Siuslaw National Forest
This coastal rain forest trail is an enjoyable hike most times of the year, even in the rain. You've got plenty of foliage and canopy to soften any downpour. Just be careful crossing that 240-foot cable suspension bridge.
8) High Desert Museum, Bend
Learn about Oregon's native cultures and life on the high desert here, and never mind that rainstorm brewing outside.
7) Oregon Coast Aquarium, Newport
Please keep in mind that 1/3 of our exhibits are outdoors, so it's always a good idea to wear layers of clothing as the coastal weather can change quickly. Avoiding the rain altogether may not be possible. Still, that means there's plenty to see indoors, including the Aquarium’s Passages of the Deep exhibit that allows you immerse yourself in the ocean realm that exists right off the Oregon coast.
6) Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Portland
There's good reason you went here every year for school field trips. It has something to do with the fact that you can have fun learning and avoid the occasional rainfall that might interrupt other field trips.
5) Portland BrewBus
OK, so this is more for the 21+ crowd. Just park at the DoubleTree Hotel at Lloyd Center at 1:30 p.m. and head on over to the lobby to meet your tour guide. You'll be glad you did, if you're a fan of Oregon craft brews.
4) Powell's Books
Forget about the crummy weather for an afternoon and search for that new favorite book of yours.
3) Soaking Pool at McMenamins Old St. Francis School, Bend
Take a relaxing soak in this unique, semi-enclosed saltwater pool made of luxurious turquoise tile work.
2) Wanderlust Tours, Bend
Sure it's raining outside, but why not venture underground for a Lava Cave Tour, where it's nice and dry.
1) Just enjoy it!
We Oregonians are tough bunch when it comes to the rain. We don't let a few drops get in the way of our daily lives.
So, what do you think? Do any of these give you some creative ways to have fun, despite the weather? What are your favorite things to do when it rains? Tell us in the comments below.
