Highway 101 stretches along the Oregon Coast for 363 miles, and it offers scenic views of the ocean and coastline. Along the way, there are a few little detours you can take that offer even more cool attractions. Otter Crest Loop is a side trip that leads you to some sweeping ocean views, a cool bridge, and a famous punchbowl. Check it out!
The Otter Crest Loop is located just south of Depoe Bay. Driving southbound, you'll pass Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint (shown here), then follow the signs to divert onto the loop.
Cross the Ben Jones Bridge over Rocky Creek. This pretty arch bridge was built in 1927 and spans 360 feet.
Soon after you cross the bridge the loop becomes one-way, going southbound. Make sure to keep a lookout for cyclists along the way.
Along this 4.2-mile scenic loop, you'll find many spots to pull over and check out the views.
You'll soon reach Otter Crest State Wayside, which offers a commanding view of Cape Foulweather. On a clear day, you can view 30 miles of coastline from this vantage point.
Keep an eye out for spouts - this is an excellent spot for viewing whales. In some places, you might even see them directly below you!
After the Otter Creek State Wayside, Otter Crest Loop turns into a two-lane road, and you'll see signs for the Devil's Punchbowl, one of the coast's famous natural attractions.
At high tide, the water churns and bubbles inside the punchbowl, which was likely created when the roof over two sea caves collapsed. During winter months, the huge waves are even more impressive!
From here, you can access five miles of beach, which takes you all the way down to Yaquina Head.
If you don't want take a long beach stroll, hop back in the car and continue southbound. You'll exit the Otter Crest Loop, and soon come to the turnoff for Yaquina Head. The lighthouse is a must-visit destination.
