Do you remember the days where you had to drive to a video rental store for your home movie night? Browsing aisle upon aisle of new releases and classic films... it really was an experience. And Blockbuster was *the* iconic video rental hub of the day; the Coca-Cola of movie rentals. While digital downloads and streaming services eventually rendered Blockbuster obsolete, the tangible experience of renting a movie is something that can't really be replaced. Oregonians know this, as evidenced by the still-standing Blockbuster in Bend. This beloved place has become a point of pride for the town; an attraction offering a nostalgic experience people seek out. And, as of 2019, it's the last remaining blockbuster in the entire world -- a feat that deserves to be celebrated!
In 2004, Blockbuster had over 9,000 locations across the U.S. But now, there’s just one left in the entire world, and it's in Oregon.
The Bend Blockbuster is alive and thriving, proving to be an invaluable community asset in even the most tumultuous times (see: 2020).
Somewhat ironically, this video rental store owes much of its success to, in fact, a Netflix documentary.
The store played the titular role in “The Last Blockbuster,” a 2020 documentary that started trending in the Top 10 most-watched movies on Netflix.
This nostalgic documentary tells the real story of the video rental titan's demise, and how the Bend Blockbuster is keeping the spirit of a bygone era alive.
But that's only half the story: the real reason for the store's success, in fact, is owed to Manager Sandi Harding.
Harding epitomizes the American spirit of digging in, getting to work -- and finding gold.
She runs the Bend Blockbuster with an eye for the nostalgic, playing up some of the most notable cultural touchpoints of the video rental era.
Harding loves the '90s, and the Bend Blockbuster often has fun displays featuring iconic movies from the decade.
And, of course, you'll also find the checkout well-stocked with classic movie snacks.
The Bend Blockbuster has no plans to close; thanks to the success of a Netflix documentary and passionate manager who believes that some experiences simply can't be replaced by screens.
The last remaining Blockbuster in the U.S. is a true triumph. Locally run by passionate people, it's a place that brings folks together through a shared experience.
Oregon has so many claims to fame, but this one might just be the coolest. For more information on this Oregon treasure, including new releases and fun merchandise, visit the Bend Blockbuster website.
