Hey you guys! Oregon is a pop culture paradise. Numerous famous flicks were filmed here, including "Free Willy," "National Lampoon's Animal House," "Kindergarten Cop," and "Twilight." But there's no Oregon film more famous than "The Goonies," the 1985 caper about a group of kids from Astoria's Goon Docks neighborhood. It's a cult classic, and you'd be hard-pressed to find an Oregonian who doesn't totally love this movie. Happily, the Oregon Film Museum in Astoria is a place where film fans can totally geek out over the Beaver State's most famous flicks, and even experience iconic moments in movie history.
This is the Oregon Film Museum in Astoria. For fans of "The Goonies," this place is a filmic mecca.
The museum is housed in the old Clatsop County Jail in Astoria, which was a working jail from 1914 through 1976, and is most famous for its cameos in "The Goonies."
This building, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was used in the iconic opening chase sequence of the 1985 classic.
Today, film fans will geek out before even steeping foot inside the building, as a Jeep similar to the one used by the Fratelli gang in "The Goonies" can be found in the parking lot, complete with bullet holes near the rear license plate!
The Oregon Film Museum opened in 2010, corresponding with the 25th anniversary of the film. In the years since, it's become a must-visit place for film fans, both in Oregon and beyond.
The museum offers visitors a behind-the-scenes peek at how movie magic is made.
The building houses a ton of movie memorabilia, including props, costumes, and well-known items from "The Goonies."
Visitors also have the opportunity to create their own short films in an exhibit that features miniature sets and green screens. How cool!
