Usually, when someone invites you to church, they want you to join them pray, light a candle, and sing a hymn or two. If you agree to meet a friend for church at 2600 NE Sandy Boulevard in Portland, you'll want to be prepared for a different kind of religious experience. Check out Church Bar:
You'll find Church on the corner of Sandy Boulevard and Lawrence Avenue, and from the outside it might look like any little storefront church. But this is not your grandma's Sunday School - it's a religion themed bar with a Gothic flair.
Step inside to find a cozy space with a well-stocked bar.
There's plenty of space to give thanks for the bounty of incredible food and drink you're about to receive.
Grab a menu (they're made of wood to capture that old-school monastery vibe) and peruse the food and drink menu.
You'll find an array of sinfully-delicious burgers and sandwiches...
...and a baked mac and cheese that could make angels sing.
The drink menu includes some creative creations like Rosemary's Baby, which is made with Aviation gin, some lemon, lime and cold-pressed cranberry juice, and a sprig or two of rosemary.
Unless you're sneaking in a flask, you probably don't have the opportunity to enjoy hard liquor at any other church in Portland!
You won't want to miss Happy Hour, when confession is open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Check out all the Gothic, religion-inspired decor. There's plenty of live music here, too...but you probably won't find a church choir. Instead, you'll enjoy local bands and DJs.
The theme here is Eat, Drink, Repent, and Church provides the opportunity to do all three. For a confession unlike any other, step inside the confessional with a few friends.
Confess whatever sins you'd like, sip your drink, and take a selfie or two while you're at it.
At Church, you can congregate during the day...
...or night. It's open daily from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
