It's pretty hard to live in Portland and not know about the behemoth bookstore force that is Powell's. Dubbed Powell's The City of Books, this amazing bookstore is as big as a city block, and once inside you can actually get lost in the stacks. Head in and grab a map to navigate this giant field of books and you might just lose a day amongst the books.
Located at 1005 W. Burnside, the bookstore is centrally located and easy to find.
Selling both used and new books, the bookstore is home to roughly 1 million books.
Organization is key: there are over 3500 sections that work to keep all the books easy-to-find and accessible.
The color-coded map helps a lot too. Nine color-coded rooms will help you find your way through the store, stacked four floors tall.
Along with popular titles, Powell's also features many rare and out of print books, making it a big draw for bibliophiles.
Many well-known authors visit the store every month to read from their new books.
Basically, there is something for everyone. If you have children or grandchildren, you are not going to want to miss the kids room, which has nearly every book you could ever imagine.

Around since 1971, this store is a pillar in the community. If you can't make it to the flagship location, there are other smaller stores where you can experience Powell's around town, including at PDX airport, Cedar Hills Crossing, and on Hawthorne.
Boasting over 8,000 visitors a day, Powell's City of Books is a wonderful place to spend time getting lost among the stacks.
Whether you are looking for a new book, or just want to wander the aisles and have a little time away from the world, Powell's is the best place in town to do it.
