Lucille’s Historic Gas Station is located on
the famed U.S. Route 66. It’s about a half-mile from Hydro and is actually on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1929, it’s one of the last known examples of a two-story gas station where the owner actually lived above the business.
This gas station was operated by Lucille Hamons from 1941 all the way until her death in 2000. Hamons was known as "Mother of the Mother Road" due to her unwavering generosity to drivers coming down Route 66 during the end of the Great Depression. She would sometimes exchange gas for tickets or appliances, occasionally buying people’s cars and sending them out west on a bus to look for work.
Lucile and her husband actually acquired the gas station just a few months before the U.S. entered World War II. That led to a decline in road traffic as things like tires and fuel were heavily rationed. After experiencing a boom during the 1950s and 1960s, traffic on Route 66 decreased sharply after Interstate 40 was built in 1971.
Today, you can stop by this American landmark to check out the old pumps and peer inside the abandoned shop. If you look closely, you’ll be able to see the cooler where Lucille kept ice-cold beer during a time when the country was officially dry. Taking a snapshot or two with this unique symbol of a bygone era is something everyone in Oklahoma should do before they die.
An educational plaque informs visitors about the history of this retro gas station.
