Let’s be honest, when it comes to seeking adventure, Oklahoma is often overlooked. However, what we fail to realize is that the Sooner State has plenty of natural and man-made wonders that are worth seeing. Take for instance the Skydance Bridge in Oklahoma City. How many other pedestrian bridges can you name that look like a bird in flight? Personally, I can’t think of any, making this man-made wonder in Oklahoma a true hidden gem. Folks who live in the area know how impressive this artwork project is. But for those who don’t, trust me, you’re going to want to see this for yourself.
If you’ve visited the Scissortail Park, you’ve probably pulled out your phone to take a pic of Skydance Bridge. Am I right? That’s because this isn’t your ordinary pedestrian bridge, it’s literally a work of art.
Inspired by the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, the state bird of OK, the bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state. Its most striking appearance are its signature scissor-like, double wings that give it the illusion of the bird soaring over Interstate 40. It’s no wonder that this bird-like sculpture received recognition as one of the best public art installations in the country.
It doesn’t stop there! In case you didn’t know, this iconic landmark was among four bridges to be featured on a USPS First-Class Mail stamp. Now if that doesn’t convince you to visit, I don’t know what will. Nature has certainly blessed us, and I love it when we use nature as inspiration to create extraordinary things. And this unique bridge is quite the accomplishment. At night and on special occasions, the bridge illuminates in the OKC skies. You can even submit a request for special lighting as long as it’s for something that will be beneficial to the community. How cool is that?
As far as the specs goes, the bridge was completed in 2012 at a cost of $6 million and used to connect upper and lower Scissortail Park. It’s 380-feet long, 20-feet wide and the winged sculpture is 197-foot-tall. This means it’s easy to spot this striking architectural structure when you’re driving through downtown OKC.
But even better, you can plan a day trip to walk the bridge and explore Scissortail Park. Another man-made attraction, the park offers tons of family-friendly recreational activities like kayaking, pedal boats, splash pads, pickleball and basketball courts, walking trails, and more. Plus, it’s tucked along the Oklahoma River, and there’s also a small lake as well as more art installations for you to enjoy. It’s truly a unique urban oasis that you should visit at least once.
