Spending a Saturday morning "yard sale-ing" through neighborhoods and towns is a fun way to spend a summer weekend. Cincinnatians love to hunt down antique and thrift shop treasures, so much so that we even put together an antique road trip through town in a previous article here. If this type of shopping is right up your alley, then surely you're already aware that the World's Longest Yard Sale - the 127 Yard Sale - travels right through Cincinnati each year at the beginning of August. This year's event is coming up and you'll absolutely love this summer tradition in the Queen City.
The 127 Yard Sale first started in 1987 as a way to get travelers off of the major highways and onto more scenic routes.
Originally formed in Jamestown, Tennessee, the sale now extends 690 miles from Michigan to Alabama. It mostly follows Highway 127, hence its name, but you will also find sales just off the route throughout the states. Luckily for us here in Cincinnati, this massive yard sale goes right through the Queen City.
The sale includes vendors of all sorts along the route, from simple front yards to fields with hundreds of vendors in one spot.
One local business located right on 127 in Mt. Healthy, is Covered Bridge Antique Mall (pictured above). It's a great stop along the route!
In addition to individual businesses, many campgrounds, parks, and fairgrounds participate with many vendors on site.
Through the most popular areas of the sale, you will definitely encounter some traffic, but just take your time and enjoy the scenery. That was the original intent, after all.
Another popular stop for the 127 Yard Sale near Cincinnati is the set up at Main Strasse in Covington (shown below).
This area includes many vendors, so you can park and see a lot in one stop. Since Covington is such a colorful city (more about that here), relax and enjoy, and grab a bite to eat while you shop.
If you're wondering what you'll find at the yard sale, the answer is just about everything.
Some sites are set up like a traditional yard sale with items pulled directly from a home, while other vendors sell actual antiques and collectibles. You'll find toys, decor, furniture, artwork, electronics, clothing, and the list goes on and on.
Some take the 127 Yard Sale quite seriously and plan the entire weekend around it. The website linked below can help you plan, and even has suggestions for overnight accommodations and dining options.
The event always takes place on the first Thursday - Sunday of August; this year's sale takes place August 2-5, 2018. Start your planning at the sale's website, or just wing it and hop in your car with some cash and a few snacks, and head down Highway 127 to see what you can discover.
The World's Longest Yard Sale is a great opportunity to meander through Cincinnati and the surrounding areas, hunting down treasures and taking part in this exciting tradition in our region. Have you shopped the 127 Yard Sale? Do you plan on attending this year? Let us know in the comments!
