When it comes to summer fun, there are only so many places where locals can swim. Sure, we have Lake Erie and some local pools, but are there any sandy beaches further inland that are a bit less populated? Believe it or not, yes, there are. Locally, there are a few swimming beaches near Cleveland that offer a refreshing dip in the summer months, and one of the less crowded swim spots is Wallace Lake. This lovely stretch of sandy beach is overseen by a lifeguard, and a fountain offers a refreshing splash of fun. Grab your swim trunks and some sunscreen, because this lovely secluded spot beckons.
Tucked away in Mill Stream Run Reservation is a lake that's gorgeous all year round.
Mill Stream Run is an interesting and often overlooked reservation. It stretches across a few communities, including Strongsville, Berea, Middleburg Heights, and North Royalton. Featuring the East Branch of the Rocky River and evidence of indigenous American activity, this site is rich in natural and historical legacies.
At 17.6 acres, Wallace Lake is a stunning remnant of an old sandstone quarry.
The old quarry was flooded in 1941 to create Wallace Lake. Today, it's a vibrant and lively site... both for people and for the native flora and fauna that prosper on its banks. However, visiting in the winter may reveal another side of the wildlife in Ohio: tobogganing!
While the surrounding park itself is lovely, the main draw of this lake in the summer months is its sandy beach.
This petite sandy beach is intimate and cozy. It's not as vast as some of the Lake Erie beaches, but it's clean and family-friendly if you're craving a chance to soak up the sun.
This Berea swimming hole is monitored by a lifeguard and is a lovely spot to soak up the sun.
During your visit, remember to obey lifeguard rules and only swim in authorized areas. As the lake is a historic quarry, the lake's depth will vary in other sections... but the Wallace Lake Beach area is welcoming and fun for a day in the sun.
If you get hungry during your visit, there's a concession stand on-site to help you refuel.
Remember to bring your own water to keep hydrated, just in case Wallace Lake Cafe is not open during your visit. However, weather permitting, the cafe is open daily between noon and 7 p.m.
After drying off from your swim, you might enjoy a hike through the park's loveliest features.
There's a lovely little waterfall in this park that doesn't require much hiking, as well as a hillside where locals once organized their own mini Woodstock. The landscape of this park has stories to tell, and you'll fall in love with it in just one hike.
Don't forget sunscreen during your visit... whether you're swimming or hiking, it's easy to get sunburned when you're right on the water!
As water is reflective, the sun's rays can feel pretty intense in this area. Armor up to protect your skin... and bring snacks and drinks to refuel after your adventure as an added layer of preparation.
No matter the season, the landscape at Wallace Lake is always breathtaking.
