If you're ready to check out some beautiful architecture in Cincinnati, you don't have to look far! Locations like Union Terminal and Music Hall show off some spectacular examples of the city's architecture. Let's take a look at one historical location that we think you will love.
This is St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, located in downtown Cincinnati.
Construction on the cathedral began in May 1841 when the first cornerstone was laid near Plum and 8th Streets. It was dedicated in 1845 yet construction continued for several more years as the city’s population grew.
The classical Greek influence is one of the most striking parts of the building, with massive Corinthian columns rising from the ground.
Another jaw-dropping element to this building? That incredible spire that reaches to the sky and houses the cathedral’s bells. The single spire stretches 224 feet and transforms this from an ordinary classical revival structure to a building that is easy to spot and difficult to forget.
One step inside, however, and you’ll find more reasons to admire the cathedral.
What will you see? Symmetry and a rich mixture of marble, tile, and gold, all prime examples of classical Greek architecture.
As is the case with most historical buildings, the details show off craftsmanship and the amount of love that went into erecting the cathedral.
For example, take a look at the delicate curves and botanical finishes on the capitals. Can you imagine how much work went into creating that?
Also, when visiting or taking part in Mass, be sure to take a longer look at the mosaics, murals, and stained glass images which cover the walls and windows with colorful stories.
Straight ahead, you’ll spot this beautiful mosaic, featuring colorful Venetian glass. It evokes Old World illustrations and craftsmanship.
Check out this zoomed-in image. Quite impressive, isn’t it?
Overall, this is one beautiful cathedral you won’t want to miss visiting.
